Fire Emblem Fates is a great strategic RPG
Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright is the logical sequel to Fire Emblem: Awakening. Most elements from that game are recycled. The foundation remains the same: you command your troops on the battlefield in battles that can be made difficult if you wish. Additionally, two characters can have children together if they fight together often enough and build a bond.

The biggest downside of Fire Emblem: Fates, in my opinion, is the story and the new characters. Both are not nearly as strong as in Fire Emblem: Awakening. The epic story from that game is exchanged for a rather predictable adventure.

If you're looking for a fantastic strategic RPG on the 3DS, then get Fire Emblem: Awakening. If you can't get enough of the Fire Emblem gameplay, it wouldn't hurt to also purchase Fire Emblem: Fates.

A great introduction to the series for me!
I've been trying to get into the Fire Emblem series for a long time. Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright is my first Fire Emblem game. I think it's a good introduction to the series.

The story is quite unique. You are a prince or princess of the kingdom of Hoshido, but as a baby, you were kidnapped by Nohr. Years later, the two countries go to war. You reunite with your family in Hoshido and choose to stay with them. In the beginning, there aren't many exciting moments; you simply get introduced to your family and learn how truly evil the intentions of King Garon, the man who you always called father, are. Most of the story is rather predictable, but there is a lot of emotion in the later moments, such as when you have to confront your siblings from Nohr.

You're not alone on the battlefield; before each battle, you can command a whole army with the goal of defeating all the enemies or the leader. The missions themselves are easy; the real challenge is keeping all your fighters alive. In case you didn't know, in the Fire Emblem series, your characters don't magically come back to life when their HP is depleted, they are permanently dead. Fortunately, there is the casual mode where your units come back after each chapter for those who find this too difficult.

Fates' strongest point is probably the presentation. All the locations look fantastic, and the small battles are entertaining to watch. The music is some of the best I've ever heard; 'Road Taken' is probably my favorite. I don't mind spending 1 hour on a level if I get to listen to the amazing soundtrack the whole time.

If you find RPGs like Pokemon too easy, I have a good challenge for you here. Even if you play on the Casual setting, this game can still give you trouble. There will be times when you'll want to throw your 3DS out the window out of frustration, but once you overcome the challenges, there is no greater feeling of satisfaction.
Hide.

Upgrade the Hot Spring to level 3 in Fire Emblem Fates. Then head to your next battle (it can also be a challenge). Once you've completed that battle, Izana will offer to join you! This only works after you've cleared Chapter 23.
